Delicious! Estupendo!
Really nice Espresso Machine. In spite of being refurbished, it arrived in "as good as new" condition. We've used it several times a day ever since it arrived and every time the coffee is perfect with rich crema and the right temperature. In case you decide to use it, the froth is really thick, too. This machine really knows how to make nice froth. We're super happy with it.

Looks Nice - Doesn't Perform
I had the machine for one day. It's on its way back to the seller.

I gave it 2-stars. One for looks and one for performance. It looks really nice on the counter top but it does not perform like advertised. I admit I had high hopes after moving up from a Krups combo coffee/espresso maker. (It was fine until the steam wand quit working)

On the Breville, the "pressure gauge" did not function at all. The needle didn't budge! I tried all the suggestions, more coffee, less coffee, tamp harder, tamp softer, finer grind, courser grind. It made espresso, but no crema.

Next, I tried the steam wand. When I turned the knob to steam, it pumped out water for about 6-8 seconds before the steam developed. If I had had some milk, it would have been ruined. Instead, my counter top got soaked. Also, the hot water function shoots hot water as soon as you turn the knob for it. Again, my counter got flooded with hot water. (probably my fault for not looking - but there is no "on-off" for the steam or hot water) There is an "empty me" feature in the drip tray that pops up when the tray is full of water. It had a broken hinge that was about to fall off.

For the price, I expected the steamer to roar but it is not under pressure - the water is dropped onto a heating element and then it vaporizes. Any cheap machine will do the same.

Good luck if you buy this machine.

A good espresso on this machine
This is a review about the quality of the espresso the machine makes, and not about
the short or long term reliability of the machine, since I have only had it for about a month.

I bought coffee beans from a starbuck coffee shop and asked the barista to grind the beans for an espresso maker. Decided not to buy a grinder (since reviews on grinders seem to indicate nothing but trouble). The first results I got were disappointing. No matter how well I packed the 2 shot coffee filter, or how much coffee I packed into it, the pressure on the indicator dial never reached even the beginning of the "optimum" range.

Then I decide to ask the barista if they had a finer espresso grind. They said their finest was # "2". With that grind, I filled the 2 shot filter with coffee to the top of the filter, and packed the grinds as hard as I could. Started the machine. The needle started to rise, reached the optimum range, went all the way up the optimum range and beyond it before finally stopping when the machine stopped pouring coffee! I also noticed that the amount of coffee poured was somewhat less than 2 shots of coffee. Removing the filter holder from the machine, it was clear that the filter had water, that had not pressed through the coffee, mixed in with the spent grinds.

The next cup of espresso I made, I did not pack the coffee as hard, or fill as high. I left about an 1/8" between the coffee and the filter rim . That did it. After starting up the scale the needle stopped 3/4 up the optimum level scale, and the coffee it made looked like 2 full shots and, when I removed the filter holder the coffee filter was mostly dry! The espresso had a nice layer of crema, added a little Milk, lots of foam...perfect!

What did it for me was 1) the right grind, 2) the right packing pressure, 3) the right amount of coffee.

I hope this helps some fellow home baristas!

Pressure Gauge broken
This is the second espresso maker I ordered from Amazon in the last two weeks. The first (DeLonghi EC155 Espresso) I had to return. That unit seemed contaminated and would produce a yellowish liquid no matter how many times I tried to flush the unit before making my first espresso.

I then decided to buy something higher-end. Unfortunately, the unit I received, had a broken pressure gauge and am sending it back. Not sure at this point if I should reorder same brand or try something else...

Two weeks later...

I decided to give it a try and now have a second one. The pressure gauge is working fine in this one, but the water compartment does not close snug and tends to slide out during operation. To slide it in I have to simultaneously lift another component (water delivery pipe) which seems to hang too low preventing the water compartment from sliding right in. I was expecting better quality for 0. Coffee tastes fine though. I am giving it another star.

Month later...

This thing actually makes damn good coffee. Since coffee will soon be the only medicine you can buy without government blessing and IRS enforcement, I am very happy I made this purchase. Four Stars now.

Love It
I cannot wait to get up in the morning since I got this machine. No lie. It takes up a good deal of space so if you are in a tight spot the pod style might be better for you. But this one looks totally cool if you have the room for it. I adore it.

  4. This is an opinion on the quality of the espresso machine is pretty reliable machine Surl in short and long term, because I’ve got about a mois.J ‘buy coffee beans in a Starbucks coffee and asked the bartender to grind the grain of an espresso machine. They said that their best was the number “2.” With this release, I filled the filter with two shots at the top of the coffee filter, and packaged the grind as hard as I could. Connecting the machine.
